ENDOWMENTS OF THE QUEENS OF PARANTAKA CHOLA I

Inscriptions of Iyyarappar temple complex richly glean various royal personalities of Chola dynasty through their endowments to Lord Iyyarappar or other deities in the temple complex. Among the royal personalities, various Chola queens are prominently seen from the period of Aditya Chola I.

Three queens of Parantaka Chola I viz., Perumal Thiruvarangi, Sozhasigamani and Tribhuvana Mahadevi are gleaned through their endowments to Lord Iyyarappar. The queens of Parantaka I endowed perpetual lamp to the God Iyyarappar, for that two of the queens had gifted ninety enduring goats to supply a uzhukku of ghee to burn the lamp. While one queen endowed thirty kalanju of gold for the same. Besides, a metal lamp was also endowed by two queens for burning the lamp.

Queen Perumal Thiruvarangi endowed ninety perpetual goats and a metal lamp in the 32nd regnal year (SII V. 524)* of the king Maduraikonda Koparakesari. She is also referred in the inscription as Chozhamadevi. Another Queen Chozhasigamani endowed for a lamp in the 34th regnal of the king (SII V. 525). In addition, it is stated in the inscription that the queen was the daughter of Nanguri Nangai of Mayilap…(damaged). Besides these, the inscription also mentions the weight of the metal lamp gifted by her as 95 balam.

Queen Tribhuvana Mahadevi endowed 30 kazhanju of gold to burn a perpetual lamp in the 14th regnal year of Maduraikonda Koparakesari (SII V. 541). The responsibility to carry out the endowment was entrusted to Sivapuri Nagarattom.

It is always fascinating to identify royal people in inscriptions, at the same time it’s too risky, since Tribhuvana Mahadevi, Solamadevi, Sembiyan Madevi, Panchavan Madevi are common names among the Chola queens and Princesses.
